Forklift Parts in More Detail
There are many components which make up a lift truck. The forklifts key parts include the frame of the truck, the engine components, the tilt cylinders, the overhead guard and the wheels. Additionally, a forklift has a variety of attachments. All the parts making up a lift truck are all important as they work together to make the operation of the machinery possible. The following paragraphs describe a few of the lift truck parts in detail.
The Overhead Guard - The overhead guard is actually the lift truck's metal roof, that sits atop the operator cab. It's job is to protect the operator whilst they are using the machinery. The overhead guard ensures that nothing falling from above onto the truck would damage the controls in the cab or injure the driver. The overhead guard is integral to the frame assembly on several units.
The Mast - Mounted either to the forklift frame or the front axle, the mast is the vertical forklift component made of interlocking rails. The mast enables the forks to move up and down whilst providing lateral stability. The interlocking rails may either have rollers or bushings as guides. There are a couple of ways the mast could be operated: hydraulically by one or more hydraulic cylinders or chain operated with motive power provided by a hydraulic motor.
Forklift Carriage - the forks and various other types of attachments are mounted to the carriage. The carriage is attached to the mast directly to the hydraulic cylinder or it is attached by chains. In order to allow the forks to be raised and lowered, the carriage can have either bushings or rollers to guide it in the interlocking mast rails.
Load Back Rest - a back rest is a metal rack that keeps a load from falling backwards when the carriage is lifted to its full height. The back rest is either bolted or welded on to the carriage.
Forklift Attachments - a range of attachments may be fixed to the front of the lift truck. The most common kind of attachment is forks. What's more, there are L-shaped members, rollers, rotators, roll clamps, pole handlers and so on. These different types of attachments are very useful for transporting various kinds of loads.
